Samsung Electronics Unveils Xilinx-Based SmartSSD Solution

Samsung Debuts Semiconductor Innovations at Samsung Tech Day that Maximize Data Center Efficiencies and Enable AI, Enterprise and Emerging Technologies

It has been an exciting couple of weeks for Xilinx, with the Versal and Alveo announcements and all of the activities at XDF Silicon Valley and XDF Beijing. Adding to this momentum, at last week’s Samsung Tech Day, Samsung Electronics announced SmartSSD, a Xilinx-based (FPGA) SSD that enables high-performance accelerated computing closer to the data, bypassing CPU limitations.
Technologies introduced at the event include 7nm LPP EUV, SmartSSD and 256GB 3DS RDIMM

Helping to enable future innovations in the next-generation of data centers like high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and emerging applications, Samsung’s SmartSSD powered by Xilinx FPGAs will increase speed and efficiency, and lower operating costs by pushing intelligence to where data lives.
For example, you are looking for an image of a cat. Normally the system would have to transfer the data through the server CPU and then to the storage device and back to the CPU and back to the user. It is significantly more performance and power efficient to have the storage device itself search directly for “cat.” That’s the beauty of SmartSSDs.

Current Xilinx FPGA-based acceleration solutions are targeted towards compute applications like speech recognition, video transcoding and genomics, and are deployed close to the server CPU. In contrast, SmartSSD is focused on accelerating storage services such as compression, de-duplication and encryption, as well as compute functions, like machine learning inference and big data analytics, that can benefit significantly from being accelerated closer to the actual storage component. And similar to Xilinx accelerators that are deployed close to the server CPU, SmartSSD offers a platform approach to an application developer ecosystem where the familiar SDAccel environment can be leveraged to develop and deploy acceleration solutions.

This technology underscores the close technology collaboration between Xilinx and Samsung, and highlights the adaptability and flexibility that Xilinx brings to the data center.

AXI

When part of a team, your group can become more capable than a single individual, but only if your team can work together and communicate effectively. Having members of a group talk over each other leads to nothing but a cacophony, and nothing gets done. For this reason protocols need to be established, such as letting others speak without interruption, or facing those you are addressing. The same is necessary with electronics, especially with system on chip (SoC) designs.

Introducing the AXI ProtocolThe protocol used by many SoC designers today is AXI, or Advanced eXtensible Interface, and is part of the Arm Advanced Microcontroller Bus Architecture (AMBA) specification. It is especially prevalent in Xilinx’s Zynq devices, providing the interface between the processing system and programmable logic sections of the chip.My first introduction with the interface was in a tutorial I was following that was to be implemented on Aldec’s own development board based off the Zynq XC7Z030, theT…

VECTOR (The good Robot)

vector is not a toy but rather a joyful, smart home robot..
A helpful character. Vector is happiest when he’s helping. He’s eager to accommodate your requests and answer your questions. He isn’t a fully grown robot butler capable of doing your taxes, buttering your bread, or writing a position paper on the future of robot/human relationships, but he’s a helpful little guy who puts his whole self into helping you out. That’s what we call Characterful Utility. TIMER Vector will set a timer and share in your joy when your muffins come out perfect, or when your laundry is finally done.

BLACKJACK He’s a robot. He’s a friend. He’s a blackjack dealer.

WEATHER Ask him any city’s weather and he’ll show you

TAKE A PHOTO Ask him to take a photo, say cheese, and wait while he snaps it. Can we call this a robot selfie?
